Without being able to see the specific item in question, it is difficult to definitively say whether it is hematite. Hematite is a metallic gray or black mineral that often has a reddish-brown streak. It is commonly used in jewelry and has a distinctive metallic luster. If the item in question matches these characteristics, it is likely hematite, but it would be best to have it examined by a professional to confirm. **

When you wash hematite with water, the surface of the mineral may become cleaner as any dirt or debris is removed. However, the water can also cause the iron oxide in hematite to oxidize further, potentially changing the color of the mineral. Additionally, the natural luster of hematite may be lost as the water washes away any surface coatings or patinas that contribute to its metallic sheen. **

Backpacking typically refers to a form of low-cost, independent travel where individuals carry all their belongings in a backpack. It often involves staying in budget accommodations, using public transportation, and immersing oneself in local cultures. You can make campfire bread without a campfire by using a Dutch oven or a cast iron skillet. Simply prepare your bread dough as you normally would, then place it in the Dutch oven or skillet. Next, place the Dutch oven or skillet in your oven and bake the bread at the same temperature and for the same amount of time as you would if you were baking it over a campfire. This method will give you a similar result to campfire bread, with a crispy crust and a soft, fluffy interior. **

It is difficult to accurately identify stones based solely on a description. Hematite is a common iron oxide mineral that can produce a reddish dust when ground. However, without further testing or analysis, it is not possible to definitively determine if the stone is a meteorite. Meteorites are rare and typically have unique characteristics such as a fusion crust or Widmanstätten patterns, which would require specialized testing to confirm. If you suspect it may be a meteorite, it is recommended to consult with a professional geologist or meteorite expert for a more accurate identification. **

It is difficult to definitively identify stones without proper testing, but based on your description of the reddish dust appearing when you polished the stone, it is possible that it could be hematite. Hematite is known to leave a reddish streak when scratched or polished. However, without further testing or analysis, it is not possible to determine if the stone is a meteorite. Meteorites are rare and typically require specialized testing to confirm their origin. **
